Courses, courses and courses...

Dr Robert Santosa spent 3 days last week teaching at various courses for general dentists in Sydney. On Thursday it was time for Module 3 in Straumann Dental Implant System restorative course. The course is attended by dentists all over Australia and was held at Sydney Hilton. We spent the day on Short Span Fixed Dental Implant Prosthesis.

On Friday and Saturday, it was time for another Australian Dental Association NSW CPD course. We had two busy days discussing the restorative aspects of implant treatment including a hands-on component using multiple dental implant systems.

London Waterloo and London Chelsea ITI Study Club presentation

On 16th April, Robert Santosa lectured at the Sloane Club, a lovely part of London Town. Thank London Waterloo and London Chelsea ITI Study Club for the warm welcome and hospitality!

Robert presented the topic "Fixed vs Removable Full Arch Implant Restorations" and "Delivery of Screw vs Cement retained restorations".

Fixed vs Removable Full Arch Implant Restorations

Removable and fixed implant-retained prostheses can greatly enhance patients’ quality of life, improving their speech, appearance, and ability to eat and otherwise function normally. Yet patients may resist this type of treatment due to barriers, including cost, fear, and lengthy treatment times. It is, therefore, important that clinicians engage in discovering and understanding their patients’ concerns and expectations in addition to making a thorough and complete diagnosis of their dental conditions. It is imperative that clinicians become familiar with factors that determine the indication and/or contraindication of both treatment methods.

The following topics will be discussed with case examples:

  • Treatment planning of fixed vs removable full arch prostheses

  • Treatment options of fixed vs removable full arch prostheses

  • Prosthetic design

  • Complications

  • “Everything on 4” – is it easily achievable and appropriate?

Delivery of Screw vs Cement retained restorations.

An important clinical decision remains the choice of the connection type – cement or screw retained. This connection can have an impact on the prognosis of the overall reconstruction. Ultimately, the choice of retention in implant prostheses still mainly depends on the individual’s preference and experience. Understanding the factors influencing the different types of retention mechanisms and their methods of delivery will allow clinicians to consider the potential prosthodontic maintenance/ complication issues.

The following topics will be discussed with case examples:

  • Step by step protocols for screw vs cement-retained prostheses.

  • Complications of excess cement

  • Techniques on how to minimise excess cements.

  • Restorative options for screw-retained restorations.

As usual, Robert has the jetlag and walk around beautiful London. He posted some photos here.

2019 ITI Australasian Section Congress

On 8th- 9th March 2019 Robert Santosa was in the Gold Coast as part of the 2019 ITI Australasian Section Congress. He was the Scientific Chairman of the Organising Committee.

Over 230 dentists participants attended the highly successful meeting. This was the first Congress for Robert as the Chairman of the ITI Australasian Section. The theme of the meeting was Ageing and Aesthetics in Implant Dentistry”. The keynote speakers, Prof. Frauke Müller of the University of Geneva and Dr. Will Martin of the University of Florida, were supported by excellent local speakers. For more information about the Congress, please click here, and on Social Media here. Robert managed to have his usual morning jog during the meeting here.

The 11th Congress of the Asian Academy of Osseointegration

On 10th - 11th November 2018, Robert Santosa was in Seoul, South Korea presenting at The 11th Congress of the Asian Academy of Osseointegration (AAO). The meeting was held over 2 days at the prestigious Yugwangsa Hall, College of Medicine Korea University. The theme for the meeting was " The Challenge and Sustainability for the Future of Implant Dentistry"

Robert presented the topic " Prosthodontic protocols for long-term prosthetic success"

The long-term performance of implant-supported prostheses is influenced by various factors such as prosthetically driven treatment planning, to ensure the correct 3D implant positioning and prosthetic design;

the timing of implant placement; soft tissue management; and prosthetic design to manage the possible development of complications. The presentation will propose some advice, clinical recommendations, and alternative treatment options to reduce the risk of complications in daily clinical practice.

As usual, Robert had the jetlag and walked around the beautiful city of Seoul early in the autumn morning here. For more information about AAO, please click here.

Meeting in Switzerland

Dr Robert Santosa went to Switzerland last week for several days. Unfortunately, it was neither for fun nor a holiday. He attended an International Team for Implantology Digital Task Force meeting and ITI Online Academy Editorial Board meeting in Zurich.

As specialist dental clinicians, the dentists in Macquarie Central Prosthodontics are not just passionate for providing the best dental care for our patients. We also passionate in dental education, inspiring our dental colleagues to be the best they can be professionally and personally.

Robert managed to find a couple of days after the meeting hiking the Eiger Trail and trying to burn off calories from eating chocolates. He posted some photos of his hike on Instagram.

Course information for Sydney and Adelaide: Edentulous solutions using implants

Dr. Robert Santosa presented the Straumann Edentulous Solutions in Sydney and Adelaide.

The Straumann Removable Implant - Retained Overdenture course is designed for Dentists and Technicians at various levels of implant restoration proficiency who would like to further their knowledge with restorations for completely edentulous patients. Through practical restorative sessions supported by didactic instructions, participants will become familiar with advanced treatment planning concepts in the specific area of restoring edentulous arches with removable overdentures.

Participants should be competent with the restorative procedures for components of the Straumann Dental Implant Systems.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

• Current approaches to rehabilitating the edentulous jaw using dental implants and using removable full arch restorations.

• Treatment planning of edentulous patients will be discussed, including proper case selection, treatment sequencing, indication and selection of prosthetic design, choice of surgical protocol, number of implants required, spatial requirements, as well as cost and patients’ satisfaction.

• A step-by-step demonstration of clinical steps will be presented, including chair-side denture reline implant pick-up and verification procedures of mandibular overdentures retained on 2 implants.

• Intra-operative complications and post-insertion maintenance recommendation will be also discussed.

• Special reference to Straumann’s new Novaloc attachments and Locator abutments.

Dr. Robert Santosa presented at the ITI World Congress 2017 in Basel, Switzerland

The ITI welcomed more than 4,800 participants from 90 countries to its global flagship event, which took place in Basel between May 4 and May 6, 2017. The scientific program offered a wide range of practically oriented lectures and panel discussions and was supplemented by a poster competition, a rich social program offering ample opportunity for networking as well as an extensive industry exhibition.

A further highlight were the Breakout Sessions that allowed participants to customise their own Symposium program to meet their individual needs and dive into certain topics and aspects in more detail. Dr Robert Santosa presented at one of these sessions together with other younger generation of ITI Fellows and Members, offering an excellent opportunity to see how the younger generation approaches implant dentistry today.
